OT Itinerary: Heres A Two

  Discover Ponmudi Hills, a hidden gem in Kerala for your next weekend getaway. Steeped in natural beauty, it is the perfect place for a slow holiday. Located at a three-hour drive from Thiruvananthapuram, it stands tall at 3,000ft and is surrounded by mist-shrouded slopes. Ponmudi Hills is known for its well-preserved terrain that houses a vast collection of rare flora and fauna, including mountain flowers, wild orchids, and exotic butterflies.

  The place is famous for Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to over 200 species of birds, more than 40 species of reptiles and mammals, and a variety of fish and amphibians. The Karamana River flows through Ponmudi Hills, adding to its lush green beauty. For bird watchers, the place is a paradise, with a wide range of species ranging from the Malabar grey hornbill to the three-toed kingfisher to painted bush quail. Don't miss the opportunity to trek the popular 18km Varayadumotta trail or take a break and visit the breathtaking Kallar River and picturesque Meenmutty Waterfalls.   The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Thiruvananthapuram district, is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. The sanctuary is inhabited by elephant herds, sambar, barking deer, wild boar, and numerous other species that wander around in their natural habitat. Additionally, one can spot various species of birds, including endemic ones such as the Malabar Grey Hornbill, White-bellied Treepie, and the Small Sunbird. Don't forget to visit the nearby Peppara Dam, which is an ideal spot for trekking and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surroundings.

  Check Out The Falls

  Menmunty Falls is a popular tourist spot near Ponmudi Hills. The falls are known for their mesmerising beauty and the small natural pools and rocks that can be found on the way to them. You will need a permit and a guide to ensure a safe experience.

  Day 2

  Trekking Trails

  If you're feeling adventurous, you can try trekking in the hills around Ponmudi. There are several trekking routes available, such as Varayadumotta, Seethatheertham, and Manchala. Varayadumotta is known for its panoramic view of the hills and the Nilgiri Thar. Seethatheertham is another popular trekking trail where you can find the ruins of temples and the footprint of Goddess Seetha. Additionally, you can also enjoy some rock climbing activities at Ponmudi Hills.

  Standing tall as the second-highest peak in Kerala, Agasthyakoodam offers an unparalleled view of the region. Explore the unique flora and fauna that surrounds you, and be amazed by the diversity of bird species at Agasthyakoodam Biosphere Reserve. However, please note that a guide and permit are mandatory for visiting the reserve.

  Alternatively, you can spend some time in the breathtaking Golden Valley, situated just 16 km away. This verdant valley runs along the banks of the Kallar River and is renowned for its golden sand and crystal-clear water. The Kallar River is also called the "River of Stone," due to its stony riverbed, which is covered with boulders and pebbles of various shapes and colours.

  Best Time To Visit

  The ideal time to plan a trip to Ponmudi Hills is between the months of October and March. During this time, the hills are shrouded in mist and have a pleasant cool climate. It can get chilly, so make sure to carry some warm clothes. During the summer season, Ponmudi Hills offers a refreshing break from the scorching heat in Trivandrum. If you plan to visit after the monsoon season, the entire region will be draped in lush greenery and provide a vibrant view.

  Getting There

  Thiruvananthapuram is the nearest airport and railway station. There are plenty of buses and cabs which travel from Thiruvananthapuram to Ponmudi.

  Accommodation

  If you're looking for a place to stay, you might want to consider the wooden and granite cottages at the Golden Peak resort, which is run by KTDC or Kerala Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. The resort is located amidst beautiful, misty hills and offers guests the opportunity to take leisurely walks around the property. Please note that the resort has a policy of not allowing entry through the forest check post after 5 pm, so make sure you arrive before that time.
