Murmansk is the largest city north of the Arctic Circle and is the only ice-free port in the Russian Arctic. During World War II, the city was a link to the Western world for Russia and was a site of commerce for Allied forces. Since the Cold War, Murmansk has been the headquarters of the Russian Northern Fleet. Highlights include the snowy white Church of the Saviour-on-Waters, built on the shore for sailors of Murmansk, and the Alyosha statue, which overlooks the city harbor.
